Ameren Illinois, the utility company covering central and southern Illinois, worked with the Illinois High School and College Driver Education Association (IHSCDEA) to launch a downed power line and vehicle safety module into driver education classrooms across the state. The project started in 2017 when a then high school student was driving home during a spring storm when strong winds blew power lines onto her vehicle. Not knowing what to do, she exited the vehicle. Luckily the power lines were dead. If they were live, she could have been electrocuted or seriously injured.
Through her scary experience and bravery in sharing the story, there was a real opportunity to educate young drivers on this dangerous scenario. The web-based module contains an instructional video, quiz, infographic, glovebox card and other learning materials instructors can utilize in the classroom. Learn more.
