ORGAN DONATION PRESENTATIONS
In February of 2000 Jim Carter, along with Melissa Jewett, initiated a program
in Vermont high school Driver Education classes, focusing on the importance of wearing
seat belts and explaining the organ donation option on the back of the Vermont driver's
license. Melissa, due to health problems, was not able to continue with the presentations.
Jim and Melissa's interest in the project came through a support group that they belonged
to called, Vermont Volunteers for Organ Donation. Melissa is a pancreas and kidney
recipient. Jim's daughter, Andrea, was a multiple organ donor in 1990. Jim, from February
2000 to May of that year made presentations to over 10 high schools, which included over
40 presentations. Since early May of 2000, Tom Donovan, of Burlington, joined Jim in
making these presentations. Tom is a heart transplant recipient. Tom received his new
heart in Pittsburgh, PA on December 26, 1999. Together Jim and Tom have visited more than
18 Vermont high schools making more than 100 presentations around the state of Vermont.
They have also made presentations to Rotary Clubs, school in-service programs, and
alternative high schools.
