HB 223 No High School Graduation Project Required:
A local board of educaiton may require their students to complete a high school graduation project. However, the State Board shall not require any student to prepare a high school graduation project as a condition of graduation from high school prior to July 1, 2011.
HB 213 Voluntary Shared Leave Non-family Sick Leave Donation:
The State Personnel Commission in cooperation with the State Board of Education shall adopt rules and policies to allow any employee to share leave voluntarily to a non-family member recipient. They shall not donate more than five days per year to any one non-family member recipient. The combined total of sick leave donated to a recipient from non-family member donors shall not exceed 30 days per year.
HB 482 Reinstatement of Sick Leave/School Employees:
The State Board of Education shall adopt rules to reinstate unused sick leave when an employee returns to employment. The maximum period of separation after which sick leave is reinstated shall be three calendar months longer for school personnel employed on a 10 month contract than for personnel on a 12 month contract.
HB593 Change School Starting Time:
Requires local boards of education to conduct a public hearing before determing the opening and closing dates for the public schools. Except for year-round schools, the opening date for students shall not be before the second Monday in August; the closing date for students shall not be more than 42 weeks later.
HB 917 Implement Executive Order Number 11/Protect Employees:
The .5 salary decrease and furlough will not adversely affect employee sick leave or retirement provisions.
HB1176 Reorganize Schools with High Dropout Rate:
Requires local school administrative units to reorganize high schools that have a graduation rate of less than sixty percent for two consecutive years. The new design shall include at least five of the 16 career clusters recognized by the U. S. Department of Education. Each career cluster shall include a four-unit career and technical concentration with at least one course at an advanced level. Virtual school and work experience courses related to the career cluster may be used to meet the concentration requirement.
Each year, school counselors, or other faculty members shall make information about the career clusters, educational requirements, and career outlook available to all eight and night grade students.
HB 1292 Employment of Non Certified School Personnel:
In the event of the employee's dismissal, demotion, or suspension without pay the employee may request a hearing before the board. The board may grant a hearing, but is not required to do so. In the event a hearing is granted the non certified employee shall have the right to be represented by council at the employee's expense provided that the employee provides prior notice in accordance with the local board of education's policy.
Senate Gas Tax The Senate approved a proposal that prevents gas tax from dropping lower than the current 29.9 cents per gallon. In 2006, the Legislature capped the rate at 29.9. The provision then said the rate would go no higher than 29.9. The current Senate bill says it will go no lower than 29.9.
