2006 News from the Legislature

June 9, 2006:

I heard from Mr. Causby about an hour ago and he reports the following:

  • The full House Appropriation Committee will vote on their budget on Tuesday of next week and the full House should vote on Wednesday.  The House version does include growth money for additional ninth graders that will be taking the driver education course. The fund for fuel was reduced from 16 to 13 million in the House.

  • Gene has a meeting scheduled with Rep. Doug Younge on Monday to try and get wording in that will allow Driver Education to apply for some of the fuel fund.  If he is successful, he will then go to Sen. Tony Rand to get the same wording in the Senate version.

  • In addition, both the House and Senate versions include an 8% raise for teachers, so Gene thinks that is a done deal.

  • Of course the budget bills will go to a joint committee after Wednesday to hammer out the details and differences.

I will email you additional information as I receive it.

June 17, 2005:

According to Mr. Causby, the House has now passed its version of the budget and the $10.00 per pupil cut is in their budget. If you will remember, we were able to get the cut taken out of the Senate budget.  The budget now goes to a conference committee.  Gene thinks that the members of that committee will be named on Monday and he will give me a list of them just as soon as they are named.  If there is somebody on that committee that you know or if one is from your county I am sure that Gene will be asking us to contact them and ask them to help with getting that cut taken out of the final budget.  I will provide you with a list just as soon as I get it from Gene.

May 25, 2006:

I just got off the phone with Gene Causby and he informs me that the Senate will vote on its version of the budget today.  The following provisions that will affect us in the budget:

$457,971.00      for the additional projected growth in the number of students

8%                   salary increase for teachers

5%                   salary increase for central office personnel

5%                   salary increase for non-certified personnel

3%                   COLA for retirees

Gene further states that there is 16 million set aside for additional fuel costs, but we are not addressed in this.  He is going to try and get the language changed so that we can at least apply for some of these funds for the increase in fuel costs we are experiencing.

I will send you further updates as they become available from Gene.
