2004 News from the Legislature

July 19, 2004:

This just in from Gene Causby reporting from Raleigh.

  • Teachers will receive an average of 2.5% raise which is a step plus an increase.

  • Central Office personnel will receive $1,000 or 2.5%, whichever is greater.

  • Retirees will receive a COLA of 1.7%.

The School Calendar Bill did pass with some modifications - effective 2005/2006 school year, school can begin no earlier than August 25 and end no later than June 10.  Teachers workdays were reduced from 20 to 15.  Some systems with a history of bad weather are exempt and other systems can petition the State Board of Education for a waiver.

Driver Education received a cut of $659,511, which is about half of our reversions for last year. The cut was made after additional funds were added to take care of the salary increase for teachers.

Gene thinks that after everything comes out "in the wash", we really will not be taking much of a cut in real dollars. WE STILL NEED TO CUT THE REVERSIONS!!!

June 3, 2004:

Phil McGirt reports that he just received the following info from Gene Causby.

This is not good news!  This is probably time to contact your legislators.

Transportation Dept (DOT) has released their budget with the following provisions:

        1. Increase of .6% for growth in ninth grade enrollment

        2. Reduce total per pupil expenditure to $245.00
